What Type of Fabric is Perfect for Spa Robes? by Angela Lynn
When people visit a day spa while on vacation or at home, there will always be spa robes for them to wear. These robes are provided so the individual has something comfortable to wear after undressing and while heading to the massage table, sauna, pool, etc. They are also worn to help absorb excess water that may still be on the body after the pool or the spa. When finished, the spa robes are returned at which time they are laundered and used for the next guest. Hence, they are typically required to be durable and easy to care. Most high quality spa robes are made with strong durable stitching that can withstand repeated laundering and drying in the hospitality industry.
For the consumer, the one thing that makes spa robes different from any other robe purchased is the fabric. After all, the entire concept of the spa is to help a person relax, unwind, and eliminate stress. For that reason, spa robes are always much softer than ordinary robes and designed to fit but not too snugly. The main focus is to make sure spa robes are soft and luxurious so they are enjoyed even when they are worn at home.
A popular material for spa robes is terry cloth. Robes made from high quality terry cloth should be soft, fluffy, absorbent, but not overly heavy. There are many different grades of terry. In the case of bath towels, the heavier or denser the terry, typically the better and more expensive the towel. However, in the case of a spa robe, heavier is not necessarily better since you have to wear it on your body, and a heavy robe is simply not practical. The trick is to find a perfect balance between the weight and the softness. For most people, any spa robe over 4 pounds will be likely too heavy to be practical for home use. This is especially true after the robe has soaked up the water from the body.
Fortunately, many spa robes today are made with terry on the inside and a lighter material on the outside to give it the perfect balance of softness and weight. For example, some are made with a smooth lightweight microfiber fabric on the outside
