Hannah Montana Costumes – Transformational Character by Deborah Bishop
For several years, Miley Cyrus has been the reigning tween queen of pop music and television. She attained new heights in 2009 when she starred in “Hannah Montana The Movie.” Millions of girls want to emulate the beloved Hannah, a girl who is unaffected by fame and fortune.
Hannah’s life is a fairy tale come true, and during the magical time of Halloween, any girl can transform herself into this megastar. The Hannah Montana costume is one of the most popular ever created. It’s the stuff of which dreams are made.
However, shouldn’t responsible parents delve deeper into this idolatry? Should this fantasy character be admired or feared? Is the actress who plays the character a positive role model for our children or will she turn into another Britney Spears?
Let’s examine the facts and see if we can predict the future.
Hannah Montana is a fictional character portrayed by Miley Cyrus, who, as almost everybody knows, is the daughter of famed country singer, Billy Ray Cyrus. Art imitates life in the hit TV series, where Billy Ray also plays her father. Hannah is a rock superstar who dons a blond wig to conceal her true identity. In her daily life, as Miley Stewart, she’s an average middle school girl who is bullied and humiliated by the “cool” kids. An easily identifiable character whose only revenge is her success as the world’s most popular pop singer.
This alternative universe shows what school is like in the 21st century. There are drama queens, phonies, good kids, and everything in between. There are always life-lessons to learn (friends are more important than fame or fortune). The show is filled with solid family values, and mirrors the life of Miley Cyrus, the singer, songwriter, and real-life superstar.
Miley was born Destiny Hope Cyrus. Her first nickname, “Smiley,” evolved into Miley (“a rose by any other name”). The 16-year old is a family-oriented, spirited, and intelligent young lady. She holds her own with late-night hosts David Letterman and Jay Leno. She appears to be a non-materialistic, “normal,” teenager. Not an easy feat considering the responsibility of carrying a hit TV show while maintaining the pressure of super-stardom.
Miley is already “giving back” to a society that has been good to her. For every ticket sold on her recent concert tour, a dollar was given to the City of Hope, a cancer research and treatment center.
If it weren’t for her phenomenal career, Miley could be the girl next door. She dresses casually, enjoys sleepovers with her gal pals, and shops at Target. She seems unpretentious and well-grounded. This gifted girl-woman has not lost sight of the importance of family and friends. Her “Hannah” persona reflects her life as Miley; a girl who adeptly balances two worlds.
Although no one can predict the future, at this point in time, Miley is a great role model for “tweens” (8- to 12-year olds). As both Hannah and Miley, the girl represents someone who is responsible for her actions, cares about other people, has healthy relationships, does not succumb to peer pressure, and maintains a good sense of humor about the whole thing. She’s an inspiration to millions of girls who aspire to be successful, creative, and productive human beings.
If our children have to emulate one high-profile personality, then we are, indeed, fortunate to have someone like Miley Cyrus, alias Hannah Montana, at this particular moment in history.
