Tips On Choosing Your Next Bed
More and more, the bedroom is not just a place to sleep. It often doubles as a place to watch television, work on the computer, or just unwind in private. Most people want a bedroom that is comfortable, stylish, and restful. Creating that feel begins with the selection of your furniture.
Keep both the size and the number of pieces scaled to the size of the room. In a smaller room, a large bed like a four post or queen sleigh bed can be overwhelming. If the bedroom is on the small size, you might consider opting for a headboard alone instead of a complete bed. Another possibility would be purchasing a chest instead of a dresser. You can always hang a wall mirror if you need one.
If there is sufficient space, a sleigh bed has an elegant look and then a cozy, snug feeling at night. Traditionally, this style has rolled tops on both the foot board and the headboard. They need to be paired with items that are of a similar scale. Bow front pieces, such as chests, nightstands, and dressers, work well with this style.
Sleigh beds are a more modern style than some traditional furniture. They were first built during the early nineteenth century, but they were designed for one. They were the equivalent of the day bed of today. Canopy beds, which preceded them, often had heavy curtains which could be drawn to block cold drafts. Both styles are available in modern interpretations that feature not only wood but also leather and metal. Finishes were traditionally dark, such as cherry or walnut, but new models can be found in a full range of colors.
Wicker headboards can add an airy, casual feeling to the bedroom. They are most often painted white, which can help brighten a dark room. Headboards covered in fabric can be used for the same purpose or to make a more dramatic statement when a darker color is chosen.
Whatever style of bed you choose, you should select bedding that suits it best. For a four post or canopy bed, a bedspread is a good choice. Comforters or quilts look better with sleigh types. Take into account the finish as well, since pale paint or stain normally look best with bedding in lighter shades.
It is not uncommon for bedroom furniture to be kept until it is no longer functional. As such, consider that you may need to sleep in the bed you choose for many years. If you take a little time to select a style you can live with, you will probably be more satisfied in the long term.
