Fleece Blankets World Record Set in LA by Fleece Ponchos
Los Angeles has celebrated a Guinness World Record this year for the largest gathering of people wearing fleece blankets.
Fleece blankets and football matches make perfect sense in the UK – after all it’s freezing for most of the year so fleece blankets are perfect for keeping you cosy in the terraces. But it isn’t Manchester or Newcastle that has led the way for outdoor sports events but LA. The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim lured fans to the Angel Stadium with half price tickets and a free fleece blanket.
The Angels had already drawn a sell-out crowd of over 40,000 at its season opening victory, but would need to guarantee an audience of over 17,758 all wearing the fleece blankets for five consecutive minutes to beat the existing world record set by the Cleveland Cavaliers at a basketball game.
The Angels gave away a free red fleece blanket – the team’s primary colour – featuring the name of one of their new star players, Hideki Matsui. An adjudicator from Guinness World Records attended the game to check whether a record had indeed been set. The Angels said they were excited at their first chance to break a world record giving fans a ‘unique and memorable’ experience (and a free fleece blanket!)
Baseball teams regularly offer discounts to lure in fans during midweek games when it’s a tough time to sell tickets, but this is the first time free fleece blankets have been handed out. The gimmick proved to be a successful publicity stunt attracting fans and gaining a lot of media coverage for breaking the world record. The largest gathering of people wearing fleece blankets was a hit with the press for being particularly silly and making a good press photo, creating a sea of fluffy red with almost all of the 43,510 Angel fans donning the fleece blankets. The press had a field day with puns when one fan clearly refused to wear his free fleece: “This wet blanket is not about to be anyone’s robe-bot.”
