Worst Year Ever For Rotting Algae on French Coast
Normally at this time of year, as the sun starts to shine over Europe, France normally see’s a huge rise in tourists taking short breaks and day trips. With much better weather than the Uk, cheaper food, and very nice beaches, France is normally an easy option for holidaymakers.
However, this summer, rather than beaches full of ice cream eating tourists. The beaches are covered with rotting algae. Miles of the northern France coastline has been hit by tonnes of the rotting algae. When the algae is within the sea, it’s not harmful at all, however, once it’s washed up and begins to rot, it becomes toxic.
Already this summer, a man has been hospitalised after he inhaled some fumes from the rotting algae. The 27-year-old, horse riding, vet had to be dragged to safety after his horse inhaled fumes from the algae and died within minutes.
Some of the councils that have been hit by the deadly algae are investing thousands of Euros in an attempt to rid the beaches of the algae. However, currently 70 beaches have been reported with the deadly algae making it the worst year so far, this makes the cleanup job even more difficult. No doubt the French economy will be affected as the visiting public are being warned away from the dangerous beaches.
Day trippers won’t be the only people affected by the smelly beaches. Owners of holiday homes may choose to not visit this year if they cannot benefit from the beaches. Not only will French tourism be affected by this, but also the owners of the holiday homes will end up paying for their French home insurance even though they didn’t actually use the house.
Insurance for holiday homes is quite expensive so if you don’t end up using the house within the year, it does feel like a waste of money. Of course some holiday home owners will still decide to visit, despite the algae, just so they don’t waste money on items like insurance for second homes.
Environmentalists are campaigning because they believe that the reason for the large amount of algae is down to pollution created by intensive farming. They argue that the waste pollution from the intensive farms gets into the water and that’s what causes the algae to get washed up and start rotting. We’ll just have to wait and see what affect this will have on French tourism.
