How to Set Up a Family Budget

Money problems have lead to the downfall of many couples. He doesn’t like how much money she spends on household expenses, and she resents his expenditures on toys like golf carts and mammoth TVs. Maybe she’s a shopaholic and buys more than the family can possibly ever use, or he could hold a tight rein on the purse strings and not provide the things his family needs. Although there are certainly other reasons, lack of money seems to cause the most problems. Thanks to these tough economic conditions, many families have had to cut back spending which lead to many disagreements.

So they can learn how to use their money properly, it’s usually best that these couples set up a budget sheet. You can start by establishing a place where you can keep all of your paid bills and receipts organized. These bills could conveniently fit into a photo storage box. It will be much easier for you to file taxes at the end of the year if you keep everything organized. Since the IRS recommends keeping all paperwork for a minimum of three years in case of any audit, you might want to start three boxes, one to house the papers for each of the years.

In these modern days, you should definitely turn to your computer for help. You could start your spreadsheeet program and setup columns with headings such as housing, credit cards, car expenses, entertainment, etc. Down the left side of the sheet you can type the months of the year. This will give you a place to keep track of your various expenses during the calendar year. After you have added up all of the expenses, you could put the resulting total under the appropriate section. At the beginning of the new year, all you need to do is total the various columns. You can file your taxes more easily since you’ll already have everything totaled up.
